Enhancing Precision and Compliance in Pharmaceutical Cold Chain

March 10, 2023 | 6-MIN Read

Client Profile:

A prominent pharmaceutical importer in Sri Lanka, entrusted with distributing leading global brands across the local market.

Challenge:

Navigating the intricacies of pharmaceutical supply chain management posed a significant challenge for our esteemed client. With consignments arriving from Europe and Asia, the mission was to ensure the smooth distribution of products to local distributors and hospitals, following value addition to the imported items. However, achieving this mission was not straightforward for the client. They had to maintain accurate inventory records, adhere strictly to pharmaceutical compliance standards, all while ensuring an unbroken cold chain. Discrepancies and damage in consignments further disrupted outbound processes and order fulfillment. Additionally, managing First Expiry First Out (FEFO) dispatches presented a challenging feat to accomplish.

Solution:

Our strategic intervention aimed to revolutionize their operations while tackling these challenges head-on. We provided our Goods Distribution Practice (GDP) certified, temperature-controlled facility to facilitate uninterrupted operation and ensure compliance. We devised a comprehensive 100% box-level scan-based solution that identified any discrepancies upon inbound receipt, thus ensuring inventory accuracy. This solution was further refined to the piece level, aligning with the outbound process to significantly enhance efficiency during product dispatch while maintaining the highest quality standards. Upon receiving consignments, our team conducted a 100% physical inventory check, minimizing the risk of damaged goods. Our state-of-the-art Warehouse Management System (WMS) played a pivotal role in this transformation. By utilizing the First Expired, First Out (FEFO) Dispatch logic within our warehouse management system, we ensured that products were selected for dispatch in accordance with expiry norms during cargo picking assignments.

To further enhance efficiency, we optimized the process to include value-added operations such as price labeling and kitting before products were made available for picking in the system. These value-added pieces were meticulously arranged for dispatch at each level, aligning with distributor and hospital orders while adhering to FEFO norms. Live dashboards granted our client real-time access to oversee the process, monitor inventory status, and track movements anytime, from anywhere.

Results:

The solution we provided streamlined client’s end to end operation, resulting in improved efficiency and effectiveness while ensuring unbroken cold chain. Goods Distribution Practice (GDP) certified distribution management further improved the overall quality of the supply chain. Conducting a 100% physical inventory check upon receiving consignments minimized the risk of damaged goods, enhancing the overall quality of their products. By ensuring accurate order fulfillment, timely deliveries and real-time visibility, the client’s customers experienced greater satisfaction, leading to strengthened relationships and positive feedback.
